From Mentorship to Momentum: Anna’s Career Journey

At Dress for Success San Francisco/San Jose, the path to employment often begins with guidance, preparation, and support from people who believe in each woman’s potential. Anna’s story reflects how mentorship, training, and persistence can change the direction of a career and strengthen a family’s future.

Building a Career Transition with Mentorship

Anna first connected with Dress for Success while exploring a new professional path. After years working in commission-based roles, she began reassessing what long-term stability and growth could look like.

“I sought out their services to ultimately achieve greater success in a new chosen field. Dress for Success has been such a blessing, they connected me with a mentor in the field that I am looking forward to working in the future.”

Through the organization’s Virtual Job Search and mentorship programming, Anna began working closely with career coach Courtney from Salesforce and also met an in-person career coach from Tencent. Over the course of more than a year, she focused on defining her goals, refining her professional narrative, and building confidence in her job search.

Courtney recalls that the process started with foundational career preparation.

“I am truly honored to have been selected to assist Dress for Success San Francisco with their career coaching initiatives, a role that has proven to be personally rewarding,” he said.

“For over 12 months, I have had the privilege of working with Anna. From our first interactions, I was struck by Anna's natural enthusiasm and her resolve to achieve success. This enthusiasm was a key ingredient in developing her career transition plan, fueling her momentum and drive towards reaching her targeted goals.”

Together, they developed a clear career plan. Their work included resume optimization, interview preparation using the STAR method, and building a confident introduction that connected Anna’s experience with her career goals.

“Early in our collaboration, I reminded her that ‘one rarely gets a second chance to make a first impression,’ and wow!, Anna took that to heart, and went all out to ensure her first impression counted, and was truly impactful—the results speak for themselves.”

Training, Coaching, and Community

Anna participated in several Dress for Success programs that strengthened her job search strategy and professional skills. These included the Virtual Job Search/Mentorship program, cohort-style training sessions, digital literacy support, boot camps, and one-on-one career coaching focused on resume writing, interview preparation, and online job searching.

“What programs offered by DFS did you participate in and how did they contribute to your success: Virtual Job Search/Mentorship. Tons of training programs, cohort-style programming, individual career coaching on resume writing, interview prep, online job search, mentorship, Six-Session Job Search Program, Boot Camps and Digital Literacy.”

The coaching process was intensive. Anna applied to more than 30 positions during her search. That effort led to multiple interviews and, within a two-week period, three job offers.

“During my time supporting Anna, she applied for over 30 positions, which resulted in 4–5 interviews and ultimately three job offers. Ironically, these offers all came within a two-week period during the same month—reinforcing that it’s indeed a great feeling to be sought after!”

Securing a New Role

Anna accepted a full-time role with benefits in August 2025. Her experience and dedication quickly led to advancement, and by November 2025 she was promoted.

In a message to the Dress for Success San Francisco team who supported her, Anna shared the impact the program had on her journey.

“I’m happy to share that I was recently hired as a Housing Specialist. I'm incredibly grateful to the Dress for Success program and Miracle for connecting me with such a supportive mentor, Courtney, and for all the encouragement, resources, and especially the one-on-one career coaching you provided—your guidance truly helped me land this opportunity.

“Through this program, I was able to secure a well-paying, full-time role with benefits that supports my goals and allows me to be financially stable.”

Education and Long-Term Goals

Alongside her new role, Anna continues working toward her educational goals. She has been attending Merritt College for the past year and a half and is preparing to petition for transfer to California State University, East Bay. Her plan is to continue building experience while pursuing leadership opportunities in the housing and real estate field.

Her coach continues to work with her as she grows within her organization.

“I continue to coach Anna in her career journey, but our focus has shifted towards maximizing her potential in her current role. She has generated excellent ideas for enhancing processes and client engagement within her company.”

Impact Beyond the Workplace

Anna describes the program’s impact as reaching far beyond employment. The mentorship experience reshaped how she thinks about leadership and professional development.

“It has impacted our family where now, I can give my daughter/grandsons advice on how a mentor is a valuable asset. Someone you can look forward to help strengthen your leadership skills and professional development.”

She also shared a message for the organization that supported her path.

“Just to keep providing resources and grow their continuing network of support for the women. I love this program.”
