Danielle’s Story: Support Comes Full Circle

Danielle, far right in blue, shares her Dress for Success San Jose story.

Meet Danielle. Several years ago, after a layoff, she was referred to Dress for Success San Jose by NOVAworks to get ready for her job interviews. Today, she works at Provident Credit Union, and she recently came back as a volunteer to support another woman getting ready for her next step. Here’s her story, in her own words.

“Dress for Success is a charity close to my heart. Several years ago, after being laid off, I turned to NOVAworks, which referred me to Dress for Success. The organization provided clothing to refresh my wardrobe and prepare me for interviews. I truly needed the support: I had few professional outfits, my size had changed after the birth of my son, and my previous workplace had a casual dress code.

I felt a little nervous before my appointment because I needed clothing that was more professional than what I typically bought or wore. My consultant quickly put me at ease, assuring me that we would find great options in my size—and we did. She listened with empathy and helped me choose pieces that suited me and made me feel ready to interview. I left with a bag full of beautiful clothing, several pieces of jewelry, and a handbag—everything I needed for interviews and a new workplace. I soon found a job, and several of those pieces remain in my wardrobe today.

Giving back to Dress for Success has been especially meaningful. Over the years, I have donated clothing and jewelry to the organization, and recently I had the opportunity to volunteer in person. My current employer, Provident Credit Union, encourages employees to volunteer with designated community organizations, including the Dress for Success event on Thursday, September 10.

As a volunteer, I was paired with a client and helped her select items for her professional wardrobe. She had recently been laid off from a position she had held for several years, much of it working remotely from home. Together, we chose comfortable, professional shoes, several flattering outfits that helped her feel self-assured, and a coordinating necklace-and-earring set versatile enough for the office or an occasion out. She also received career counseling from another Provident employee volunteer. She left her appointment smiling and feeling more confident about what lay ahead.”
